An original Elizabeth II Churchill Crown coin held in a clear blister and ed on a colourful card. The card front shows a Union Jack and the Royal Coat of Arms. The reverse tells the story of the Crown. The Crown was originally known as the "crown of the double rose" and was introduced by King Henry VIII in 1526 with the value of 5 shillings. The first coins were minted in gold, and the first silver corwns were produced from the reign of King Edward VI. The face value of the crown remained at five shillings from 1544 to 1965! After decimalisation in 1971 the face value kept its five shillings equivalent at 25 pence. From 1990, the corwn had a face value of five pounds. In 1965 to commemorate the death of Sir Winston Churchill the Royal Mint struck a limited issue commemorative crown coin. This 1965 Coin was only the second English Crown to show the bust of a Commoner, the first being that of Cromwell in 1658 The reverse designed by Arnold Machin has the portrait of Sir Winston Churchill facing right, wearing his now famous Siren Suit, designed by O Nemon and is a worthy ( but not perhaps flattering ) memorial to a Famous Englishman The obverse is the laur portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Arnold Machin Year of issue 1965 Denomination Crown Total weight 28.28 gram Diameter 38.61 gram Metal/Alloy Cupro Nickel Minted by Royal Mint Presentation Plastic presentation case
