Effective and Reliable for Fireplace Repairs
The Rutland Fireplace Mortar Cartridge has proven to be an excellent solution for repairing my fireplace. The mortar is easy to apply, adhering well to the existing masonry and creating a strong, durable bond. It fills gaps and cracks effectively, ensuring that the repairs look seamless and hold up to high heat. One of the things I really like about this product is its consistency. The mortar flows smoothly from the cartridge, making it easy to control and apply precisely where needed. The gray color blends well with most fireplace bricks, providing a professional and clean finish. The only minor downside is that it takes a bit of time to cure fully, so you need to plan accordingly to ensure it sets properly before exposing it to high temperatures. However, the wait is worth it for the reliable and long-lasting results it provides. I think that the Rutland fireplace mortar is a top-notch product for anyone needing to perform fireplace repairs. Its ease of use, strong adhesion, and ability to withstand high heat make it a dependable choice.

Worked pretty decently to fill some cracks in frefab fireplace bricks
Had a handfull of cracks in the refractory brick liner in our Superior prefab fireplace and was looking for an option to keep me from either ordering new bricks or from casting my own. I cleaned the fireplace out really well with the shopvac and then used an old toothbrush with water and thoroughly cleaned all of the cracks. The largest crack I had was probably a 1/16 of an inch and the smallest were hairline cracks. This actually worked better on the larger cracks as it was able to get into the crevice and fill the void. On the hairline cracks I appied a small bead and then smoothed it with my finger and it is starting to flake off of those spots. On the larger cracks it seems to be holding perfectly. I followed the curing directions to the letter.

Works very well MUST follow specific directions
Beautiful results! Not normal caulk, much thinner and a little watery. This is intended, read on. This is specifically made for fireplaces and high-heat stove fire brick. FOLLOW their DIRECTIONS on label and watch their video referenced there. I had to pay attention and it was worth every minute! Worked exactly like they said it would. Hallelujah! Saved an expensive service call, sealed up the cracks.

Works
I had a crack in the rear reflector panel of our wood burning fireplace. We live in the blue ridge mountains and use our green to heat our living room when ever it’s below freezing outside. We burn only well seasoned oak and hickory so the fire get pretty hot and this is the second time in three years the panel has cracked. Last time we replaced the panel. This time I used this product as directed to patch the crack which at its wides was about a quarter inch in width and ran from the top to the bottom of the panel. I used a flexible spackle knife to cut it in and then waited 24 hrs for the primary cure. Then made a small fire and kept it burning for 12 hrs. I let them fireplace “sit” for another 24 hrs and then did a normal burn. 15 fires later and the patch has held perfect with no spalls or cracks. Update. After many fires the patch has held well. Follow the curing instructions and this stuff works as advertised.

Junk
Got this for my outdoor fire ring and was majorly dissapointed. First fire we had the mortar failed, must have been made in China or some place with no standards.

Clean surface and trowel with a curved tool for the corners and a flat putty knife for gaps.
The Fireplace Mortar worked well and had plenty or working time. Be sure to clean the surface (vacuum) to be caulked and you will not have any problems.

Better than expected!
Used this to fix a significant top to bottom crack in the refractory on the back wall of my air tight fireplace. Started the process late last summer, applying two 1/4" layers and heat treating between with a heat gun after no less than 10 days between each layer. I didn't build a fire until about 20 days after the last layer. That was late October. The fireplace is used daily as the staple heating source for my home in the South Centre interior of BC. As of January 05 the repair has started to breakdown, mostly because the refractory around the repair is crumbling away. On close examination, the entire refractory section this repair was done is at end of life. I really did not expect this to work as well as it did, especially since the repair was a 1/2" deep and almost 3/8" across.

Not as great
Applies easily but stays water soluble until fully cured with heat. Otherwise this thing just washes off. Very annoying.
