"I had a real romance with this book." ―Miranda July A highly anticipated collection, from the writer Maggie Nelson has called, “bracingly good . . . refreshing and welcome,” that explores the myriad ways in which desire and commodification intersect. From graffiti gangs and Grand Theft Auto to sugar daddies, Schopenhauer, and a deadly game of Russian roulette, in these essays, Chelsea Hodson probes her own desires to examine where the physical and the proprietary collide. She asks what our privacy, our intimacy, and our own bodies are worth in the increasingly digital world of liking, linking, and sharing. Starting with Hodson’s own work experience, which ranges from the mundane to the bizarre―including modeling and working on a NASA Mars mission―Hodson expands outward, looking at the ways in which the human will submits, whether in the marketplace or in a relationship. Both tender and jarring, this collection is relevant to anyone who’s ever searched for what the self is worth. Hodson’s accumulation within each piece is purposeful, and her prose vivid, clear, and sometimes even shocking, as she explores the wonderful and strange forms of desire. Tonight I'm Someone Else is a fresh, poetic debut from an exciting emerging voice, in which Hodson asks, “How much can a body endure?” And the resounding answer: "Almost everything." Review: Felled - Stunning. I love to be wrecked by a good book and this one did just that. One of my fave essay collections: eloquent, evocative, moody, original. Thank you, Chelsea Hodson. Review: every paragraph of this book feels like a poem. - "Tonight I'm Someone Else" is the first book I've read by Chelsea Hodson, who i came across by accident, while tweet stalking (maybe?) important people in the NYC literary scene. the book is a collection of essays. in the loosest sense, you could lump her in with the new, contemporary female writer, ala Melissa Broder and Darcie Wilder. and i mean that as a compliment. like, this elevated version of Twitter and blog writing. a more nuanced, poetic, and long-form approach to the self-deprecation, narcissism, depression, pop culture, and obsession with fleeting love and young men who are both desirable and 'problematic.' it's all middle-class specificity and desire for something more. but written so, so beautifully. every paragraph of this book feels like a poem. even when the story is about being twelve and knowing that you are in love with a member of the Backstreet Boys.

Yet by no means did I not like this book
There were snippets where I would be wowed and would say out loud, “dang, I felt that.” However, as I kept on reading that’s all there was...just snippets, clever one-liners of profound emotion but I wanted more than that. I wanted to go farther deep into that hurt and longing and explore it and dissect it. Yet by no means did I not like this book, I was still able to connect to it, and it did make me eager to read whatever Hodson writes next.

a riveting portrait of the mind
Chelsea Hodson's Tonight I'm Someone Else is a riveting portrait of what it means to think and live behind different "masks" of ourselves. Truly first-rate nonfiction.

Not impressed
It's good but definitely over-hyper and kind-of boring.

Lovely. Intimate. Poetic.
A great book by an intriguing author. I’m glad I upgraded to the audio book. Ms. Hodson’s voice is haunting and rings like music in my ears.

Raw & Real
What a book. The poems and essays here inspired me to write my own book of poetry and essays.

Disappointed
It was an okay book. Boring, just like the main character. The only thing that was interesting is the riffled pages and the cover but in general wouldn't recommend. It's an easy and fast read but you don't get anything form the book.

Don’t try it if you read good stuff
I’m sorry but as a student who works part-time I felt like I only wasted my money. The cover art aesthetics is good but otherwise, it’s a really boring character with nothing to leave with when you’re done with the book. I bought the used copy and it came with badly cut papers.

Arrived damaged and ripped
Brand new book arrived looking more damaged than books I’ve owned for ten years and read ten times over.
