Low

A wonderfully remastered edition of David's classic "Low" album on vinyl, and while I miss the bonus content I've been used to enjoying all these decades - my first ever copy was the Rykodisc rerelease in the early nineties with its excellent bonus material - it is nevertheless a wonderful listening experience. For those who do not know, this was a soundtrack that David was attempting to prepare for his movie "The Man Who Fell To Earth", but was surprisingly turned down by the director. No matter; the music is still available, and that's what counts. :) The term "science fiction" could easily have been invented for this album, especially side two. David works with Brian Eno to craft superb melodies and haunting landscapes of both interplanetary and eerily haunting beauty. If you're a scifi fan but haven't yet checked David out, this is a great place to start.

I’ve been listening to this album dating all the way back to its initial release in 1977. As a teenager sound quality was pretty irrelevant as I was just happy to enjoy the music. As I grew older sound quality became much more important and all of AAD transfers that I owned / had of Low were plagued by a very anemic bass. Even the remastered Japanese import suffered from this weakness but to a lesser degree. Just happened to find the most recent remaster and boy does it deliver in spades. Bass is rich and deep so that it finally fills out that tinny recording of past remastered reissues. If you’re a fan of this album ditch your old CD and buy this one you’ll not be disappointed. One thing to mention I do have 2 subwoofers so your results will vary.

This was a gift because its one of my all time fav albums. Very well received. If you're not familiar, many say this is Bowie and Eno's finest work ever for either artist. Not too far from a Masterpiece

The CD itself and the CD case came in perfect condition, well-timed, as expected. The remaster is wonderful, clarity of sound, rich and clear, lets you listen and "observe". Low was the first ever album and tracklist I listened to of Bowie, even before Space Oddity. Even without the sentiments, now knowing all his works, Low stays as a masterpiece and truly one of the highest peaks of his mountain range career. A new stage and image, a vibrant one, emerging from the occult-haunted and self-destructive Bowie. The album is euphoric, stimulated and beautiful with its bright beauty, finally ending in an atmospheric electronic instrumental, as if a fadeout, emotional and physical exhaustion. The album is better to listen as a whole, but some tracks really stand out, one of them being an all-time great "Sound and Vision".

There's no doubt about it the best way to hear David Bowie on CD is the original RCA pressings (although there are some remasters that sound pretty good as well) even though they lack bonus tracks. The original CD pressings were pulled from the tapes used during the mastering for the albums. This review is for the Japan for U.S. release vs. the West German for U.S. edition. The Ryko Au20's are better than the regular Ryko's use the same EQ choices which results in little to no bass and Bowie's voice sounding thin. When volume adjust the Ryko Au20's reportedly sound pretty good (I've only had a couple of them so my info on the Ryko edition of "Low" is second hand here since I never had it but did have the regular Ryko edition of "Low" for the bonus tracks). The Japan pressings of most of Bowie's CDs sound pretty good but "Low" runs slightly faster than the original and there's an issue with one channel being slightly brighter than the other. The tapes used for the Japan pressing clearly aren't as good as those for the West German pressing. This is one of Bowie's finest albums with Eno just be aware that while the early pressings usually get pretty universal praise this is one situation where the West German beats the Japanese edition hands down and also every other edition (in my humble opinion of course--youi're milage may vary depending on your system, your ears, etc.). Still, I like the way Bowie's voice sounds here--it has a bit more resonance even if the tape does run a bit fast in places. I can recommend the Japan for U.S. for the completist but if you're going for version to complete your collection go with the West German, or better yet, go with the original vinyl on RCA (the orange labels sound really good)as they use solid sounding copies of the masters and are done very well. I've docked the Japan for U.S. a star for the flaws I mentioned but it's still an enjoyable listen. The album , of course, deserves five stars.

This was my first time ordering a record through Amazon so I was a bit worried about it. My David Bowie album arrived in perfect condition. Very well packaged and now I can order more in the future with no concerns. I know not all records come from Amazon some are regular stores so hopefully they pack their albums as well as you do. Mientras la gente siga escuchando Rock Electroacústico, escuchará este disco, tal vez el mejor de David Bowie (y eso es mucho decir). Imprescindible.
