Are they hollow all the way through?

Yes. And they are easy to clean with dish soap. My three year old twin grandsons love them. But their one year old brother laughs really hard playing with his. Daddy enjoys playing with it. Reminds him of when he had one growing up.

Can something with a diameter of 3 inches fit in the middle whole?
