Updated Edition! As a middle school teacher, author Bart King listened carefully to the wisdom of his girl students. Along with his five sisters (!), their knowledge made The Big Book of Girl Stuff a classic that Parenting magazine has called "a must-have for girls." This updated and redesigned edition of The Big Book of Girl Stuff is still loaded with fascinating facts, activities, quotes, games, and insightful information and advice on important topics. This humorous and informative resource is filled with everything a girl needs to know and celebrates all the things that make being a girl so wonderful. And not only is it a perfect handbook for preteens, 'tweens, and teens, but it will delight moms, aunts, and big sisters as well! Review: A great book for pre-teens! - I got this book for a friend's nine year old for her birthday. She is in that weird "kind of a kid but also a wanna be teenager" phase. It's great to see her reading rather than stuck with her head in an iPad. She told me that it was her favorite birthday gift and all of her friends read it together at school and the book gets passed around throughout the day. I really agree with the information it is sharing with young girls too, for example one of the "cell phone commandments" states that it is rude to talk on the phone in front of other people if it is more than a minute or two conversation. It is also empowering at times and encourages girls to stand up for others and what they believe in. It also has some other teenybopper topics like what to do if a boy likes you and you do not like him. Review: Loved by preteen - Written in language that would appeal to any middle schooler. A great gift for the youthโฆeven in this technology age. Over 300 thick pages of topics wrapped in humor and warmth for any preteen or young teen girl. Very happy with this buy. Have given as a gift more than once. Is a hit!

Exactly what the title implies!
My 10-year-old got this book the first time when she was nine. She adored it, taking it with her whenever we went on car rides and quoting gems of information from it to anybody that would listen. Then came the fateful day when she left it behind somewhere in her school and it never turned up in the school Lost and Found. Tears of heartbreak ensued, and for weeks she'd go to the school office to check if anyone had turned it in. Of course, with a book as awesome of this, whomever found it kept it for herself! Ah, Life is hard, sometimes. Unbeknownst to her, I found a gently used copy via the nice folks at the Amazon market. When it arrived, I let her open the box. Tears again, but this time of joy! She hugged the book, hugged me, hugged the book, proclaimed she had the best Mom in the world (it was sweet while it lasted!) and ran back to her room to read. As a parent, any book that is so beloved by one of my children earns a 5 star rating from me!

I also thought she'd be more inclined to follow advice from this cool guide than she would from I
I bought this gift for my daughter's 10th birthday, as I thought it would provide valuable, current insight on peer and social issues. I also thought she'd be more inclined to follow advice from this cool guide than she would from I, her out-of-touch and ancient ;) mom! I've been reading the book along with her, and I like the fast-paced and witty text. However, I think some of the wit and sarcasm within may be lost on some of the book's younger readers (the recommended ages are 8 & Up). For example, on page 38, under the heading Fights, the book reads: If you are in the right...he will apologize...If you are in the wrong (hard to imagine, but still), you will apologize... My daughter and I haven't made it very far into the book yet, but I do find that most advice is agreeable with what I might say myself. We've given each other nicknames from a game in the book (my daughter chose Lavender Weeki Wachee for hers), and I feel that more mature topics are handled with enough information to satisfy a grade-schooler's curiosity. As an example, under the heading Kissing, French Kissing is listed by its other common names (i.e.: tonsil hockey), and is described as originating from a tradition in France dated 1,500 years ago, when a dance between partners would end with a kiss. Overall, I am happy with this purchase. I am glad that I've chosen to read this along with my daughter, so that I can clarify text as needed, and not be caught off guard by any questions she may bring to me after reading.

Excellent
My wife was worried when I ordered this book for my 11 year old niece, that it might have content that she wasn't ready for, regarding menstruation, etc. The subject was brought up in the "emergencies" section, and handled very delicately, I showed it to my wife and her fears were alleviated. I would say it is age-appropriate for any girl who is able to read at a second grade level. My niece loved the book, she couldn't put it down all night on Christmas Eve, and had read the entire thing in 3 days. I also got my son "The big book of boy stuff" and they took turns reading bits of their books to each other, and then cracking up, all evening long. It was very nice to look out in the living room and see an 8 year old and an 11 year old with their noses stuck in books, while the PS3 sat, unused in the corner. That is about as good of a recomendation as it gets.

Survive Middle School With This!
My daughter adores this book!!! I got it for her in the 5th grade and it has helped her survive middle school. She has shared it with several friends, and most of their mom's have wound up purchasing their own copy. My daughter still refers to it and all of it's quirky data and obscure holidays that we celebrate at random (Squirrel Appreciation Day is not one to be missed!) Author, Bart King (and his sister's) have done an amazing job!!! I know that some readers may be offended that sometimes boys are referred to in a negative light, but I think it is important for everyone to keep in mind that the age of girls that this book is targeted to, well, some of them haven't discovered boys yet and do think that they are smelly and weird. I think the greatest asset of this book has been the variety of one liners that are provided to help deal with peer pressure and just the basic cruelty that most people endure through the "weird years" as my daughter calls them. Having come backs to put would be bullies in their place and keep your confidence intact is essential to surviving middle school.

Iโm not offended by hardly anything but this book was inappropriate
If I could give zero stars I would. This book is awful. I am so so glad I thumbed through it before giving it to my niece. It had a number of inappropriate topics in there for young girls. One of which was regarding plastic surgery and Botox. It went into detail about liposuction and how the Botox injections work. It also stated how plastic surgery is SO POPULAR and one day they will have to decide for themselves if they want to get it done. Are you serious? Another topic was education. It stated that one of the reasons it was so important for girls to go to school was because they would be the ones at home taking care of their children one day so they had to learn to be able to teach their children. I kid you not. There was another section that said donโt tell your girl friends about any crushes you may have, because if you start talking about how great a boy is, they will start to like him too. The last example Iโm going to give is a section that dealt with bullies. Instead of giving helpful positive advice, it listed a series of comebacks the girl can use, a lot of which made reference to the other girlโs physical appearance (being fat or ugly.) I am not the kind of person that gets easily offended at all, and I would have been absolutely mortified if I had sent this book to my niece without knowing what was inside of it. At one point I actually wondered if this book was supposed to be tongue in cheek, but itโs not. If youโre thinking about getting this book for your daughter or as a gift, please take a few minutes and read through it a little. I canโt believe this has as many positive reviews as it does.
