No, you can not hook a rg, you must harpoon it.

What pens should I bee buying to use as extras for variety? Any particular brand work best?

I have been using Paper Mate InkJoy Gel Pens, Medium Point, Assorted Colors, 14 Count. They work very good. I have no problems with them smearing. I love the color assortment. https://www.amazon.com/Paper-Mate-InkJoy-Medium-Assorted/dp/B019QBOG3U/ref=sr_1_1?s=office-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1484359404&sr=1-1&keywords=papermate+inkjoy+gel+pens

what ages who can use it?

On the box it says "ages 8+". However, I think I remember my younger (than 8) children enjoying it as well, though they perhaps only did the simpler designs.

As the box says - the age range is 8 and up
