Hasbro is a business founded in 1923 by Mr. Hassenfeld, who was the son of Polish immigrants. Mr. Hassenfeld's father made his living by selling goods from door-to-door. He lost his parents at age 12 and had to quit school soon after. He then started selling produce with his brother, Hillel, for $6 a week. They worked together for 12 years before they went their separate ways because of a disagreement over how the business should be run. After that, he got a job at a company called Hubley Manufacturing, where he convinced the owner to let him sell Hubley's games in North America. He convinced the owner to let him sell Hubley's games in North America with a down payment of $50 and a promise to buy inventory at cost plus 25%. Soon after he started selling these games, he realized that there was a much larger market for games than just those from Hubley Manufacturing. So he cut his ties with them and began importing games from Europe. In 1931, Hassenfeld Brothers acquired the rights to manufacture the popular board game "Monopoly" from its inventor Charles Darrow and renamed it "The Landlord's Game." In 1935, Mr. Hassenfeld's company was renamed to Hasbro Industries and moved to the town of Pawtucket, RI where they still operate today. In 1939, Hasbro became known as a multinational corporation. In 1959 they acquired the Milton Bradley Company which made them one of the largest toy manufacturers in America. In 1968, Hasbro moved from Boston to Providence, RI where they now have their headquarters. In 1989 Hasbro merged with Tonka Corporation and become one of the largest toy companies in the world. In 1999, Hasbro Inc spent $5 billion to acquire most of Wizards of the Coast Inc who makes Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons card games, as well as other tabletop games such as Axis & Allies and Heroscape. Hasbro has come a long way since 1923 and has grown into one of the biggest toy companies in the world. Today they offer many different toys and games for children and adults alike including Monopoly, Scrabble, Trivial Pursuit, Transformers, Nerf Guns, Play-Doh and more!
